Alisha Weir to Star in Coming-of-Age Comedy 'Underdogs'

Alisha Weir, the acclaimed star of "Matilda the Musical," is slated to take on the leading role in "Underdogs," a forthcoming adventure comedy marking the directorial debut of Fabia Martin. This film delves into themes of belonging and family, offering a unique perspective on the foster care system through humor and resilience. The production team is actively collaborating with individuals experienced in the care system to ensure an authentic portrayal of its realities.

The narrative of "Underdogs" centers on two teenage girls, Nel and Zadie, as they flee their foster home. Their escape unexpectedly leads them to the renowned Crufts pedigree dog show, where they find themselves vying for victory. Along their journey through the West Country, the girls forge an unlikely connection with a diverse array of eccentric characters, all while seeking a sense of freedom and belonging that they’ve long yearned for.

Alisha Weir is cast as Nel, one of the two protagonists. The story unfolds with the determined Nel, a passionate dog enthusiast, eager to establish a bond with her new foster sister. However, an unforeseen incident compels Zadie to embark on a quest to locate her estranged birth mother, leading the duo on an impromptu road trip to Birmingham in a pilfered ambulance. For Nel, this unexpected adventure presents an irresistible chance to participate in what she considers "the greatest dog show on earth."

Amber Grappy, known for her work in "One Day," joins the cast as Patricia, the girls' overwhelmed social worker. Patricia is steadfast in her mission to locate the runaways and return them home before their foster mother, Sal, can intercept them. The film is scheduled to commence shooting in the UK within the coming year. "Underdogs" draws inspiration from young people who, despite their experiences within the care system, have demonstrated remarkable resilience and thrived, a connection Martin made through the mentoring organization PromiseWorks.

Produced by the BAFTA-nominated Candid Broads Productions, the film aims to present a fresh and honest depiction of the care system. Oriane Pick, founder of Candid Broads and a producer for the feature, expressed enthusiasm for bringing Martin's debut film to the screen, highlighting its bold and original storytelling. Anais Ferrato is also producing for Candid Broads Productions, with Aisha Bywaters of "We Are Lady Parts" fame serving as the casting director.

This film promises a compelling narrative of two young girls navigating the complexities of their lives, finding solace and purpose in unexpected places, and building a sense of family amidst their adventures. With a dedicated team and a story rooted in real-world experiences, "Underdogs" is poised to offer both laughter and heartfelt moments, shining a light on the power of connection and perseverance.
