Laika and The Gotham Film & Media Institute Announce Inaugural Animation Accelerator Fellows
The Gotham Film & Media Institute, in collaboration with Laika, has launched its pioneering Animation Accelerator program, selecting three talented filmmakers as its inaugural fellows. This initiative is designed to nurture early to mid-career animation creators, providing them with essential resources, mentorship, and industry visibility to develop their animated short film pitches. The program underscores a shared commitment to fostering innovative storytelling and pushing the boundaries of animation as an art form.
The first cohort of fellows includes Ben Ellebracht, Emily Ann Hoffman, and Searit Kahsay Huluf. Each artist brings a unique vision and established expertise to the program. Ben Ellebracht, known for his visual development work with major studios like Lucasfilm and DreamWorks TV, and his stop-motion contributions to projects such as "Yo Gabba GabbaLand!," will be developing "Celestia," a narrative centered on a reclusive girl's fascination with the moon. His background in both traditional and stop-motion animation offers a robust foundation for his ambitious project.
Emily Ann Hoffman, an acclaimed animator and filmmaker whose previous works have graced prestigious festivals including Sundance, SXSW, and Slamdance, will participate with "The Pond Prince." Her film explores the post-fame struggles of a frog who was once a reality dating show sensation, offering a poignant and imaginative take on celebrity culture. Hoffman's history of festival recognition highlights her strong storytelling capabilities and artistic voice.
Searit Kahsay Huluf, a former artist at Pixar Animation Studios where she contributed to films like "Incredibles 2" and "Turning Red," joins the program with her project "Fuzzy." This story is set in a world where humans undergo a whimsical transformation into floating fuzzballs, promising a visually creative and thought-provoking concept. Huluf also directed the Pixar SparkShort "Self," which garnered an NAACP Image Award nomination, showcasing her talent for directing and narrative development.
Jeffrey Sharp, the executive director of The Gotham Film & Media Institute, expressed his admiration for the selected fellows, emphasizing their exceptional visual creativity, deep reverence for storytelling, and genuine enthusiasm for animation. David Burke, Laika's chief marketing and operations officer, reiterated the studio's belief that the future of animation rests with artists who possess distinct voices, audacious ideas, and the courage to advance the medium. The six-month accelerator provides these fellows with direct access to Laika's Portland studio, opportunities to engage with Gotham Week programming, and exposure through Filmmaker Magazine, ensuring comprehensive support for their creative endeavors.
This accelerator program marks a significant collaborative milestone between The Gotham and Laika. Laika, a renowned stop-motion studio established in 2005, has been responsible for critically acclaimed and Oscar-nominated animated features such as "Coraline," "ParaNorman," "The Boxtrolls," "Kubo and the Two Strings," and "Missing Link." The studio's upcoming feature, "Wildwood," is anticipated for release on October 23. The fellows will also benefit from the guidance of accomplished animation creators Shawneé and Shawnelle Gibbs, Cami Kwan, and Stephen P. Neary, further enriching their experience and broadening their professional networks.
The establishment of the Laika x Gotham Animation Accelerator signifies a vital step in empowering the next generation of animation talent. By offering a structured program that combines mentorship, resources, and industry exposure, it creates a fertile ground for imaginative animated short films to flourish. This partnership not only supports individual artists but also contributes to the broader evolution and diversification of the animation landscape, promising fresh perspectives and innovative cinematic experiences for audiences worldwide.
