“Nimrods”: A Green Day-Inspired Cinematic Journey Hits Theaters This August
On May 12, 2026, Inaugural Entertainment officially revealed the theatrical release date for their much-anticipated comedy, “Nimrods,” setting it for August 14. This announcement signals an exciting summer for fans of both independent cinema and the punk rock legends Green Day.
The film, originally previewed at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival under the title “New Years Rev,” features a talented ensemble cast including Mason Thames, Mckenna Grace, Jenna Fischer, Angela Kinsey, Sean Gunn, Bobby Lee, and Fred Armisen. The narrative centers on three ambitious high school friends who embark on an adventurous road trip, firmly convinced they have secured a coveted opening act slot for Green Day on New Year’s Eve. This imaginative plot echoes Green Day’s early days, drawing parallels to the band's own experiences living in a van before their monumental success with the 1994 Grammy-winning album “Dookie,” which has since achieved double-diamond status.
Adding to the film’s authenticity and appeal, Green Day members Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt, and Tré Cool are actively involved as producers, alongside Tim Perell from Process. Ryan Kroft and Michael Rapino of Live Nation Studios, along with Jonathan Daniel, serve as executive producers. Lee Kirk, who previously directed Billie Joe Armstrong in the 2016 Universal release “Ordinary World,” directed “Nimrods” from his own screenplay, developed in collaboration with the band. The film’s title itself is a nod to Green Day’s 1997 double-platinum album “Nimrod,” which featured hit singles like “Good Riddance (Time of Your Life).” The cast is further rounded out by Kylr Coffman, Ryan Foust, Ignacio Diaz-Silverio, and Keen Ruffalo.
Inaugural Entertainment has also announced a strategic partnership with Legion M, a fan-owned entertainment company. This collaboration allows fans to invest in the Legion M Film Fund, directly contributing to the marketing and distribution efforts of “Nimrods” and other titles. This innovative approach to film financing empowers the fan community, offering them a direct stake in the success of projects they are passionate about. Legion M co-founders Jeff Annison and Paul Scanlan expressed their enthusiasm, stating that the film’s bold and original nature makes it a perfect fit for their community-driven model. Kevin Weisberg, founder and CEO of Inaugural Entertainment, highlighted the film’s ability to capture the humor, chaos, and rebellious spirit inherent in Green Day’s legacy, promising a genuinely entertaining coming-of-age story best experienced collectively in theaters. Ryan Kroft of Live Nation Studios emphasized that “Nimrods” embodies the irreverence and raw energy characteristic of Green Day’s roots, marking a forward-thinking approach to storytelling and fan engagement.
During an interview with a prominent Hollywood publication at the film’s Toronto International Film Festival premiere, Billie Joe Armstrong shared his long-standing desire to create a Green Day film, drawing inspiration from iconic band-centric movies like the Ramones' “Rock 'n' Roll High School,” the Beatles' “A Hard Day’s Night,” and The Who’s “Quadrophenia.” Armstrong also commended Mason Thames for his heartfelt performance, underscoring the collaborative spirit that brought this project to life.
The release of “Nimrods” represents more than just a new movie; it’s a celebration of punk rock ethos, fan engagement, and the enduring power of music to inspire cinematic storytelling.
The unveiling of “Nimrods” offers a compelling example of how music and film can intersect to create engaging narratives. This project not only pays homage to Green Day's enduring legacy but also showcases an innovative model for film financing and fan participation. It highlights the potential for artistic collaboration between musicians and filmmakers, bringing a fresh perspective to coming-of-age stories. The involvement of the band members themselves in the production adds a layer of authenticity that resonates deeply with their dedicated fanbase. Moreover, the partnership with Legion M exemplifies a forward-thinking approach to content creation and distribution, empowering audiences to become integral stakeholders in the entertainment they consume. This initiative could pave the way for more fan-driven projects, fostering a stronger sense of community and shared ownership within the creative industry.
