KMBO Acquires French Rights for 'Nina and the Goddess of Thunder', Presales Launched
New Europe Film Sales has commenced presales for its upcoming 3D family animated feature, "Nina and the Goddess of Thunder," which boasts a production budget of 7.5 million euros. French distribution rights have been acquired by KMBO, a prominent animation distributor known for titles such as "Ozi: Voice of the Forest" and "10 Lives." Further territorial agreements are expected to be finalized at the Cannes Film Festival.
Scheduled to commence production in 2027, with an anticipated delivery in late 2029, "Nina and the Goddess of Thunder" was a featured pitch at this year's Cartoon Movie event. This marks the debut feature film for director Kamil Polak, whose 2011 animated short, "The Lost Town of Świteź," garnered recognition at the Berlinale and received the top film award at Annecy.
Set against the backdrop of 10th-century Poland's ancient Białowieża forest, the film is an adventurous tale deeply rooted in Slavic mythology. The narrative follows Perunika, a rebellious young goddess, who accidentally misplaces her father's hammer, an essential tool for forging the sun. Her quest to retrieve it leads her to Earth, where she must collaborate with a local inventor named Nina to recover the hammer before their universe plunges into an eternal freeze and darkness.
The screenplay for this animated adventure was penned by acclaimed Polish comedians Agnieszka Matan and Joanna Pawluskiewicz. The project was further developed by Jan Naszewski of New Europe, with backing from the Polish Film Institute and Creative Europe Media. The film is structured as a co-production, involving New Europe and PFX from Poland, Fabrique d'Images in Luxembourg, and Doce Entertainment in Spain.
The acquisition of French rights by KMBO and the commencement of presales signify a significant milestone for "Nina and the Goddess of Thunder." With a compelling storyline, experienced creative team, and international co-production partnerships, the film is poised to capture a global audience upon its release. The ongoing negotiations for additional distribution deals at Cannes further underscore the widespread interest and potential for this mythological 3D animation.
